Not long after Michael Sam waved to an adoring crowd at Missouri's season opener, he looked down at his cell phone. It was 3 p.m. CT, the deadline for NFL teams to pare rosters to 53 players. Twenty others were cut by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday, all of them mere footnotes. For Sam, it meant a roadblock in his journey to become the first openly gay player to make an NFL roster.

James Harrison spent a decade as one of the NFL's most feared players. Harrison announced his retirement on Saturday, saying the urge to squeeze in one more season no longer competes with the need to stay at home. ''My love for the game isn't strong enough to make up for missing one more birthday or first day of school,'' Harrison posted on his Facebook page. ''I am retiring as a man who is truly grateful for all of his blessings.'' The 36-year-old was a free agent after spending the 2013 season with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The New Orleans Saints included 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, veteran receiver Robert Meachem and both kickers among their final preseason roster cuts Saturday. Receiver Nick Toon was among several young, relatively unproven players who survived the last round of cuts before the Saints begin preparations for their Sept. 7 regular-season opener at Atlanta. The Saints brought in Bailey after he was released by Denver and general manager Mickey Loomis said after the move that Bailey was expected to compete for a starting cornerback job.

Dimitri Patterson went from likely starting cornerback for the New York Jets to being out of a job - all in the span of one bizarre week. The Jets released Patterson on Saturday, capping a strange stretch that included an unexcused absence, accusations from both the cornerback and the team, and a suspension. The move came as the Jets got down to the mandatory 53-player roster limit. Also among the team's 21 cuts were wide receiver Stephen Hill, running backs Daryl Richardson and Alex Green, and quarterbacks Matt Simms and Tajh Boyd.

In a statement released through the NFL Players Association on Saturday, Smith said: ''I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the entire 49ers organization and 49ers fans for not being able to contribute on the field for the next several weeks. ''I want to thank my family and friends, my teammates, my union and the 49ers for supporting me during this process. I will be at work daily to participate in all permitted work activities, and to support my teammates, just as they have supported me.'' The NFL announced Smith's suspension Friday.

FINAL 2014 NFL Mock Draft Updated For: 5-8-2014

1.)Houston Texans(2-14): DE Jadeveon Clowney- South Carolina

Team Needs: QB, OL, S, OLB

Pick & Team Analysis: Jadeveon Clowney and JJ Watt together would be unstoppable and Texans fans are already creating a buzz and calling for it to happen. Not sure how well Clowney would fit in a 3-4 as a outside linebacker but he is certainly athletic enough to pull it off.

Texans are a Veteran team so maybe they look to address the QB position via Free Agency (Michael Vick, Josh McCown, Josh Freeman or trade for Kirk Cousins or Ryan Mallett (A Recent Rumor That Makes A Lot Of Sense!) and drafting a QB later in the Draft would be the wiser move.

2.)fromSt. Louis Rams(3-13):

OT Greg Robinson- Auburn

Team Needs: QB, OL, LB, S, CB

Pick & Team Analysis: With Jake Long serious knee injury, Rams could really use Auburn Tackle Greg Robinson or Texas A&M Tackle Jake Matthews now! Rams will probably restructure Sam Bradford contract and bring him back, but also add a QB later as insurance. Robinson will likely be considered Top 2 Players in this entire Draft after more scouts study his film and see him work out, he is NASTY and he finishes Blocks.

3.)Jacksonville Jaguars(4-12):  DE/LB Khalil Mack- Buffalo

TEAM NEEDS: QB, DE, OL, WR, RB

Pick & Team Analysis: Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley is a defensive guy so the Jaguars could still go with the Best Defensive Player Available and try to find a QB later in the draft. Very similar to what the Seattle Seahawks did while Gus Bradley was the Defensive Coordinator their. They Drafted Bruce Irvin in the 1st Round of the 2012 NFL Draft and then was able to get Russell Wilson in the 3rd Round. Khalil Mack is a even better prospect than Bruce Irvin was coming out of West Virginia.

4.)Cleveland Browns(4-12):  WR Sammy Watkins- Clemson

Team Needs: QB, LB, RB, OL, WR

Pick & Team Analysis: On Offense they have one of the best Offensive Tackle (Joe Thomas) and Center (Alex Mack) in the NFL, as well as one of the best Receivers in the NFL in Pro Bowler Josh Gordon and a extremely athletic playmaking TE in Jordan Cameron. So this would be a great situation for a young QB like Derek Carr, Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles.

Maybe...Just Maybe New GM Ray Farmer go gets a Veteran QB to come in a compete with Brian Hoyer for the starting position next season and add yet another playmaker like Sammy Watkins at Receiver to go with Josh Gordon. With all those weapons it wouldn't really matter who was playing QB for the Browns. If they are not confident in Hoyer, then it is a great chance they can get David Carr with that 26th Pick they have from the Colts.

5.)Oakland Raiders(4-12):  QB Derek Carr- Fresno St.

Team Needs: WR, OL, DL, QB, S, CB

Pick & Team Analysis: Raiders would be taking a huge risk trading back and trying to draft Carr later, so they might have to "reach" for the guy the truly want with this pick. Raiders Owner Mark Davis is a HUGE FAN Derek Carr!

6.)Atlanta Falcons(4-12):  OT Jake Matthews- Texas A&M

Team Needs: DE, TE, RB, OL, DT

Pick & Team Analysis:

7.)Tampa Bay Buccaneers(4-12):  QB Johnny Manziel- Texas A&M

Team Needs: DE, TE, QB, OLB, OL

Pick & Team Analysis:

8.)Minnesota Vikings(5-10-1):  QB Blake Bortles- UCF

Team Needs: QB, DE, OL, LB, WR

Pick & Team Analysis:

9.)Buffalo Bills(6-10):  OT Taylor Lewan- Michigan

Team Needs: OL, DE, OLB, S

Pick & Team Analysis:

10.)Detroit Lions(7-9):  CB Justin Gilbert- Oklahoma St.

Team Needs: CB, LB, S, WR

Pick & Team Analysis:

11.)Tennessee Titans(7-9):  DE/LB Anthony Barr- UCLA

Team Needs: OL, DE, CB, QB, S

Pick & Team Analysis:

12.)New York Giants(7-9):  OZack Martin- Notre Dame

TEAM NEEDS:  DL, LB, WR, OL, CB Depth

Pick & Team Analysis:

13.)St. Louis Rams(7-9):  DB Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton-Dix

Team Needs: OL, LB, S, CB, QB

Pick & Team Analysis:

14.)Chicago Bears(8-8):  DT Aaron Donald- Pittsburgh

Team Needs: DT, LB, CB, S

Pick & Team Analysis:
